‘Atlas of Uncertainty’ Reimagines the African City through Art and Flux

Who gets to define what African cities should be?

The prevailing Western narrative paints African cities as unsafe, unstable, and unsustainable. Atlas of Uncertainty rejects this framing.

The project offers a counter-mapping viewing cities like Accra, Nairobi, and Johannesburg holistically, recognising that uncertainty is not a flaw but a condition of resilience.

Professor Loren Landau notes: “Uncertainty is nothing new. It is many peoples’ way of life.” The goal is not to romanticise flux, but to understand it, and to see potentiality where others see only precarity.
